ollie & lou

the river bend, and the two who hold on.

where otters fall asleep holding paws so the current can't carry anyone away in the night.

ollie could never keep still.

while the other otters dozed on the raft, his mind raced. is the water colder tonight? did everyone drift off without me? what's around the bend?

one grey dawn the current caught him and pulled him off the raft. alone and spinning, he grabbed the only solid thing in reach: a smooth round pebble on a half-sunk rock. he held it to his chest as if it could hold him still. it couldn't.

then a paw closed around his.

lou was the slow, heavy, half-asleep pup who never drifted, because he never moved much. he didn't yank ollie back. lou has never yanked anything.

he just held on, heavy and steady and unbothered, and let his own weight be the anchor until the current tired itself out.

ollie and lou washed up on a pebble shore, still holding paws
the pebble shorepl. 03

the two of them, on a quiet pebble shore.

they washed up together, tired and safe, still holding paws. nobody had ever held on to ollie like that. nobody had ever needed lou to.

two stones side by side on the sand, one round, one flat
two stonespl. 04

two stones, side by side.

on that shore sat the round one, still in ollie's paws, and a flat grey one half-buried beside it. lou pried the flat stone loose, tucked it into his own chest-pocket, and folded ollie's paws back around the round one.

“keep this. when you feel yourself floating off, hold it.” a long, sleepy pause. “and when the stone isn't enough… hold my paw.”

one loud, one sleepy. both yours.

every feeling is made for both of them, so whoever you are today, there's one to send.

ollie, the caramel otter with a cowlick, in a butter-yellow sweater

ollie

the loud one · the one who drifts

feels everything at full volume and thinks three steps too far. clingy not because he's needy, but because he knows exactly what it feels like to drift away alone.

  • caramel fur, one cowlick that never lies flat
  • says “i love you” first, loudly
  • keeps the round stone. keeps losing it.
lou, the chocolate otter with a smooth head, in a dusty-blue sweater

lou

the sleepy one · the anchor

his calm isn't laziness, it's a choice: be the heavy, steady thing someone can hold on to. and yes, he is also profoundly sleepy. both can be true.

  • chocolate fur, a completely smooth head
  • says it back, quietly, every time
  • keeps the flat stone. has never lost it.
