why otters hold paws
a letter from the burrow · 14 october 2026
sea otters sleep on their backs, floating. the water keeps moving while they don't. so they hold on to each other, sometimes in groups called rafts, and sometimes they wrap themselves in kelp, so the current can't carry anyone away in the night.
it's one of those true things that sounds made up. and it's the whole reason ollie and lou exist.
the river bend version
at the river bend, holding paws isn't only about water. ollie's mind floats off the way his body once did: a text left on read, a dropped snack, whether lou is mad (lou is not mad; lou is asleep). lou's answer is always the same. he takes ollie's paw.
someone starts to drift. the other holds on. love wins. repeat, in either direction.
that's why every gif is made for both of them. some days you're the one floating off. some days you're the one holding on. pick your otter, and send the other one to your person.
