ollie waving goodnight

on 5 august we put up a very small gif: ollie, in bed, waving goodnight. two words on it. night night.

for a while it did what most of our gifs do. a few hundred thousand views, sent between people at bedtime. then in october it went somewhere else entirely. by 21 october it had 106.0M lifetime views on giphy. the tuck-in, where ollie and lou pull the blanket up together, had 84.0M.

what it taught us

bedtime is the moment. in october, most of the views across the whole library came from bedtime gifs. not “i love you”, not hype, not jokes. the last thing you say before you fall asleep.

it makes sense when you think about who the otters are. ollie and lou exist because real otters hold paws when they sleep, so the current can't pull them apart. a goodnight gif is exactly that, sent through a phone.

the last text of the day is the one people care about most.

so we're making more of them, in more languages. bonne nuit, dulces sueños, buonanotte, schlaf schön. if there's a goodnight you'd send that we haven't drawn yet, tell us.
